Noel Whelan discusses permanent clause in Jack Harrison’s Leeds loan

Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds that Jack Harrison has an awful lot to do if he wants Leeds United to activate the permanent clause in his season-long loan deal from Manchester City.

Leeds confirmed on their official website that a clause to make 22-year-old Harrison’s loan move a permanent deal has been included in the loan, meaning Harrison could remain at Elland Road beyond next summer.

Last season, Harrison only managed to show his flair and quality in glimpses. He clocked up 37 Championship appearances, scoring four goals and laying on three assists for the Whites.

The former New York City star was criticised but is expected to push on, and Leeds icon Whelan believes he must have an “exceptional season” if Leeds are to sign the England Under-21 international permanently.

“He’s got to have an exceptional season if we are to part money for him,” Whelan said. “His assist ratio has got to be better, he’s got to put the chances he gets away. Got to hit the back of the net more.

“He squandered a lot of good chances. He’s got to tick more boxes [if Leeds are to sign him permanently].”

TBR’s view – Harrison reported £7m tag is a Leeds bargain

The Daily Star claim Manchester City value Harrison at just £7million, and such a figure would make him a bargain for the Championship side should they sign him at some point during 2019-20.

But Whelan is bang on. Last season, Harrison drifted in and out of matches. If he is to be signed permanently, especially with his wages said to be £51,000 a week (Spotrac), he needs to be doing a whole lot more.

He scored four and assisted three, but both need to be in double digits this time around.
