Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds that Liverpool can “knock on the door” for Leeds United winger Raphinha, but is confident that his old club will look to keep hold of the Brazilian winger if the Reds come in for the summer signing.
Raphinha, 24, produced another sparkling display on Monday night as Leeds earned a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace – a victory that took the Whites into the top half of the Premier League table, leapfrogging Arsenal.
Goals from Jack Harrison and Patrick Bamford saw Leeds win their tenth Premier League match of the season, prompting talk of European football instead of whether the Whites have avoided a relegation scrap. They sit 17 ahead of the bottom three.
Ex-Leeds attacker Whelan responded when asked about Liverpool’s interest in Raphinha. France Football, as per GFFN, claim Liverpool have been scouting him – after he has had a hand in eight goals during his 17 Premier League appearances.
“They can knock on the door, but we are not a selling club. We are not a club in financial difficulties,” Whelan said. “We are building a team, and he is part of this rebuilding process.
“We are going to add other players – that’s going to complement him. If we sell him, that’s a travesty; it goes against what we are trying to do. I do not think that the regime here, that is what they want to do. They are building, they are happy.”
TBR’s view – Leeds can build future around Raphinha
The Brazilian produced probably his best performance of the season so far, even though the former Rennes and Sporting Lisbon failed to score of provide an assist. It was his shot that was parried by Vicente Guaita, allowing Bamford to net.
Instead selling him and cashing in, Leeds need to build around the winger. Even if they bring in £50million for him, Leeds would need to spend a similar amount to bring a player of his quality and flair to Elland Road.
He is class and Leeds have got a gem. There is no need to waste it.
