'Nobody listened': Liverpool snubbed 2016 transfer suggestion from coach who will start Euro 2020 final
Chris Kirkland has claimed that he suggested England international Jordan Pickford as a potential signing for Liverpool back in 2016.
Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, the Colne FC goalkeeper coach said he told staff at the Merseyside giants that Pickford was one of the best young shot-stoppers he played with.
Kirkland also tipped Pickford to become a special player, with the now Everton star England’s number one.
The duo played together at Preston North End in the 2015/16 season. The following year, Pickford became Sunderland’s starting keeper before joining Liverpool’s Merseyside rivals in 2017.
Since then, Pickford has established himself as one of the top shot-stoppers in the Premier League. And the keeper is also Gareth Southgate’s number one pick between the sticks for England.
The 27-year-old keeper has started every game of Euro 2020 so far. Pickford will likely start for the Three Lions this evening in the final against Italy.
But things could have been different for Pickford at club level if Kirkland got his wish in 2016.
England star Pickford was suggested to Liverpool
The former Liverpool keeper said: “I told some of the Liverpool staff that Jordan was the best young keeper I had worked with.
“I told them he was going to be something special. But obviously, nobody listened and he eventually ended up at Everton!”
With Liverpool sign Alisson Becker two years later in 2018, the Reds missing out on Pickford is hardly a cause of concern for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Brazilian keeper has been key to Liverpool’s Premier League and UEFA Champions League successes over the past few years. Whereas Pickford, for all the good he has done for England and Everton, has still shown signs that he is not quite at the level Alisson is at for the Reds.
