No way Hojbjerg and Bentancur get into Chelsea's midfield - Merson
Paul Merson has told Sky Sports that there is no way that either Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Rodrigo Bentancur would get into Chelsea’s midfield, with only three Tottenham players making his combined XI following Sunday’s draw.
Spurs battled back on two occasions to earn a point at Stamford Bridge. Harry Kane equalised with one of the final touches of the game to send the away end into a frenzy.
The goal and the result was a sickener for Chelsea. The Blues had dominated the large part of the contest.
For some, that is an indication of the progress Tottenham have made. They never gave in. And ultimately, they did what the best sides so often do. It is going to be looked back upon as a defining moment if Spurs go on and achieve something special under Conte.
However, Merson sees the result completely differently. The pundit has issued a brutal verdict on the Tottenham squad, with Hojbjerg and Bentancur receiving particular criticism.
“Other than Kane and Son, who else would have got into the Chelsea team on Sunday? You’d take goalkeeper Edouard Mendy over Hugo Lloris. You wouldn’t take Spurs’ wing-backs over Chelsea’s, Romero would get into a back three alongside Thiago Silva and Kalidou Koulibaly,” he told Sky Sports.
“But there’s no way you’d pick Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur over N’Golo Kante, Jorginho or Mason Mount, and Chelsea aren’t even going to win the league!”
No way Hojbjerg and Bentancur get into Chelsea’s midfield
Merson may not want to admit it, but Tottenham are going to be a force this season.
Manchester City already look to be well on course for the title after two games. But with Liverpool stuttering, there is an early opportunity for another team to push to become their nearest challenger.
Arsenal have that position right now. But Spurs have cleared a big hurdle by avoiding defeat at Chelsea. And they have a number of new signings still to properly introduce into the fold.
Hojbjerg and Bentancur are potentially not as good as any of Chelsea’s first-choice midfielders – though Jorginho hardly covered himself in glory. But to suggest that Tottenham do not have a squad to rival the Blues is almost laughable.
Dejan Kulusevski has been compared to Kevin De Bruyne. Richarlison saved Everton last season. And Yves Bissouma is going to be an amazing signing once he gets up to speed.
