New Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has explained why he chose to accept the job at St James’ Park. The 58-year-old also went on to state that he hopes he is shown “respect” as the Magpies boss.

Bruce arrives on Tyneside having recently quit Sheffield Wednesday. He resigned from his post at Hillsborough amid speculation that he was set to take on the Newcastle job, as reported by the BBC.

Bruce had only been with the Owls for a matter of months, but had overseen an upturn in the Championship club’s fortunes. Prior to links with the Newcastle job, there was optimism that Bruce would be able to lead Wednesday to promotion to the Premier League.

Bruce’s exit, and the manner of it, has caused a great deal of frustration amongst the Sheffield Wednesday fan base. The Owls now face a tricky pre-season period when they must prepare for the new campaign whilst seeking a new man to take the reins.

For Bruce, the Newcastle job was simply too big to turn down. The ex-Sunderland boss faces a mammoth task in winning over the St James’ faithful though. His new squad also needs plenty of work and reinforcements this summer.

Bruce will hope that he is shown patience in his new position, and also “respect”. That is respect that many Sheffield Wednesday fans do not feel he is due. Following his comments, many Owls fans took to Twitter to voice their reactions.
