Southampton defender Matt Targett has departed. Southampton’s official website confirmed that Aston Villa have signed Targett for an undisclosed fee.
This brings an end to a 15-year stay with the south coast club. After joining at the age of eight, the 23-year-old progressed through the ranks and broke into the first-team.
He leaves Southampton with a total of 63 first-team appearances to his name. During that time, he scored once and provided six assists. His attacking threat is often highlighted as his main strength.
The former England youth international has also spent time on loan at Fulham in the Championship, playing 21 times. He joins Aston Villa’s ranks after they were promoted and he will compete with Neil Taylor for the left-back spot.
Southampton now have Ryan Bertrand at left-back with two others competing to be his back-up. Sam McQueen returns from his loan spell at Middlesbrough but he spent the entire season out injured. Meanwhile, the Saints have high hopes for Jake Vokins.
Here are several tweets from Southampton fans after the club announced Targett’s exit.
