Nir Bitton issues Instagram apology after red card in Celtic clash v Midtjylland
Nir Bitton has apologised to Celtic fans on Instagram after the Israeli defender was shown a red card on Tuesday night. The Hoops drew 1-1 in a second-round Champions League qualifier against FC Midtjylland. Bitton was shown red after a bad reaction – but has sent a message to fans.
In what was Ange Postecoglou’s first game in charge, Celtic were tasked with taking on a side captained by Erik Sviatchenko. They dominated, and eventually broke the deadlock when new signing Liel Abada tapped in from close range. But Bitton was then shown a red card.
Already on a yellow, he reacted angrily to Anders Dreyer’s attempts to win a penalty. Dreyer himself was sent off after half-time, but Midtjylland did find an equaliser. Evandro’s free-kick was well stuck, but Vasilias Barkas will have liked to have done a lot more. The scoreline read 1-1 at full-time.
What has Bitton said to Celtic fans on Instagram?
Bitton was certainly at fault. His first yellow card can be put down to the midfielder playing in defence, but given his experience and that he has played at centre-back before, it was sloppy. But his second yellow was just madness. Dreyer was even found to be offside after the incident.
But to poke the opponent in the face, even after he had been proven guilty by the referee, was poor from Bitton. He will now be suspended for the return leg and with Celtic struggling for options at centre-back, it is a blow. Bitton sent a message to Celtic fans on Instagram, apologising.
