Nile John has informed Tottenham Hotspur supporters on Instagram that he has been promoted to first-team training ahead of Thursday night’s second leg against Wolfsberger in the Europa League – just weeks after his Under-23 debut.
John, 17, has enjoyed an excellent start to 2021. Having had a hand in five goals during 24 Under-18 appearances for Spurs, he was promoted to the club’s reserve side – where he has since managed three Premier League 2 appearances.
The playmaker recently laid on an assist in a 5-1 win over Brighton in PL2, and at the end of January was handed professional terms. He has signed a contract that will keep him at Spurs until the summer of 2023.
He has remained with the second string since, and now John has hinted that he could be involved with the senior side on Thursday – by posting a picture from first-team training, with Toby Alderweireld and Tanguy Ndombele in the back ground.
Jose Mourinho could hand a number of young players a chance on Thursday night, with Spurs having secured a 4-1 win in the first leg. Certainly, the likes of Dele Alli, Joe Hart and other fringe players are likely to get a run out.
Mourinho took Dane Scarlett, Jamie Bowden, Dennis Cirkin and Marcel Lavinier for the last game – all of whom sat on the bench. But with the 4-1 advantage in the bag, Mourinho may call up some younger players and John might be one of those.
Certainly, his caption “All smiles ahead of tomorrow’s [Wednesday] game” suggests he is set to be involved. It would be John’s first ever inclusion in a matchday squad with the senior side – even on the bench.
