Nikola Milenkovic is one of the most in-demand young defenders across Europe with some major clubs scrapping it out for his signature.

According to The Mirror, it would cost Manchester United £45m to prise him away from Fiorentina.

But Milenkovic was previously watched by Celtic. The Bhoys scouted the impressive centre-back and hoped to sign him for a cut-price fee.

Back when Milenkovic was playing for Partizan Belgrade, Novosti reported that Celtic were among 50 clubs watching him.

This was back in March 2017 and shortly after this scouting mission, Fiorentina agreed to sign him for just €5.1m (less than £4.5m), according to Football Italia.

Since then, the 21-year-old has gone on to establish himself as a regular at the back for the Serie A side, earning admirers across Europe.

Standing at 6ft 5in tall, Milenkovic is an aerial powerhouse and his strong tackle makes him the complete central defender.

For less than £4.5m, this would have been a bargain for Celtic and the sell-on value would have funded many new arrivals.

But Celtic missed out on the 10-cap Serbia international, which will be frustrating in hindsight.

Perhaps Celtic might take a risk next time they are scouting a promising young player, such as John Mahon (Express via HITC Sport).
