Celtic defender Hatem Abd Elhamed had a night to forget as Neil Lennon’s Hoops fell to another disappointing defeat in the Europa League last night.
The Bhoys raced into a two-goal lead at Milan, Tom Rogic breaking the deadlock after just seven minutes and Odsonne Edouard doubling the visitors’ advantage on 14 minutes.
However, the hosts were level by the 26th minute, Hakan Calhanoglu halving the deficit in the 24th minute and Samu Castillejo striking two minutes later.
It proved another horror show for Celtic at the back, with Milan netting twice more in the second half to secure a 4-2 victory.
While there were a few decent ratings amongst the Hoops back line, Elhamed was not one of those.
Glasgow Live gave the 29-year-old a 2 out of 10, writing: “A nightmare evening for the Israeli full-back.
“Three of Milan’s four goals came down his side and Hauge put him to the sword for the last two.
“Should have been able to make a challenge for both goals, but was brushed off too easily. Didn’t support Frimpong up the other end either.”
The Daily Record was more generous with a 4 out of 10, adding: “Needed to be stronger at more than a few of the goals and seemed like the trouble was all down his side.”
Elhamed played well last season but injury issues held him back, and while he’s now fit, he’s not looked good for a few games now, and was particularly disappointing last night.
Then again, he’s by no means the only player to struggle – even the usual top performers are flattering to deceive at present.
A previously well oiled machine has now well and truly ground to a halt, and it looks as though the only thing that will now work is a change in the dugout.
