Before the global health crisis put football into lockdown England were about to face off against Denmark and Italy in international friendlies. Plenty of new names were being earmarked with a potential call-up, including the likes of Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips.

An Arsenal player was also on that list. Bukayo Saka’s excellent form for Arsenal had plenty suggesting the teenager should get a call-up from Gareth Southgate.

Saka has been superb for Arsenal this season and his breakthrough season has been rewarded with a new contract.

On the international front, he might have a decision to make.

Saka is also eligible for Nigeria and told the BBC in December that he had not yet made a decision on his future.

As far as the Super Eagles are concerned, he will have to go to them first.

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation was answering questions in an Instagram Q&A this week when he made it clear Nigeria would not come begging for Saka to play for the West African powerhouse.

As reported by ChannelsTV, Amaju Pinnick made it clear Saka would need to declare himself eligible first.

“There are many players that play like Bukayo Saka in Nigeria. We don’t want to go begging any player.

“It is about ardour and fervour. If a player has decided for Nigeria and only want to be assured that he would be much welcome, we will come in and provide that assurance.”

Nigeria have plenty of English-born talents in their ranks, including the likes of Joe Aribo, Josh Maja, and Semi Ajayi. Victor Moses and Alex Iwobi, whilst born in Nigeria, were raised in England and also represent their nation of birth.

Saka would undoubtedly be a welcome addition to either squad going forward and hopefully, the teenager makes the decision he is happiest with for the future.

Arsenal fans will just hope whatever decision he makes does not distract him from his club duties.
