Nigel Martyn says one Leeds player is clearly being ‘overworked’

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been praised by Elland Road icon Nigel Martyn following his impressive display for Marcelo Bielsa’s side on Friday.

The Whites ran out 2-1 winners at Fulham, Patrick Bamford breaking the deadlock when he smashed home at the near post from Jack Harrison’s cross in the 29th minute.

Joachim Andersen drew the hosts level on 38 minutes with his first goal in English football, a volley from Ademola Lookman’s corner.

However, Leeds went back ahead with what turned out to be the winning goal just before the hour mark, Raphinha linking up well with Bamford before finishing low inside the near post.

While the Whites frontline was getting the goals, Meslier put in a superb performance in between the sticks.

He made a superb save to thwart Josh Maja in the 25th minute, then dealt with a troublesome headed back-pass and kept out an Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa effort shortly after.

Here is what Martyn said of Meslier, in conversation with a Leeds fan on Twitter:

TBR View:

Bielsa entrusting such a young player with the Premier League No. 1 role at the start of the season showed just how much potential said player has.

Obviously it’s not been absolutely plain sailing for Meslier but he’s improved massively over the course of the season and, with Leeds on course for a mid-table finish, it was clearly a good decision.
