Nigel de Jong sends message of support to Arsenal star
Arsenal star Bukayo Saka missed the decisive penalty last night as England missed out on their first major title in 55 years. The Three Lions were defeated 3-2 by Italy on penalties at Wembley Stadium.
After the game former Premier League player Nigel de Jong had some words of encouragement for the youngster. He believes Arsenal have a gem and that the future is bright.
Saka was introduced into the contest as a substitute. He was replaced in the starting line-up by Kieran Trippier as Gareth Southgate switched his team’s style.
He was tasked with taking England’s fifth penalty during the shootout. His effort was saved and Italy emerged victorious.
It’s an improvement again from Southgate’s team. They followed up their semi-final at the 2018 World Cup by reaching the final this time around. Saka played a key role in putting England in the final and his efforts should be applauded.
After the game, Steven Gerrard posted on Instagram to praise the courage of Saka during England’s defeat.
What did De Jong say about Arsenal star Saka?
The former Manchester City star was very complimentary regarding the Arsenal flyer. Despite his miss last night, he has a seriously bright future and he’ll come back even stronger from this episode.
Saka did extremely well during the tournament. His blistering pace constantly proved lethal for England and perhaps they missed him from the start against Italy.
The Arsenal man will now have a small break and then return to the Gunners to help the team enjoy a good season.
Mikel Arteta knows that eighth place won’t be good enough next season. As a result, he’ll need players like Saka to kick on once the domestic campaign gets back underway.
De Jong offered some kind words to England’s unfortunate penalty taker in the aftermath of last night’s game.
