Nigel de Jong has raved about Manchester City star Joao Cancelo on Twitter, labelling him “underrated” – after City eased past Club Brugge, winning 5-1.
Cancelo, 27, has started and finished all eight Premier League games and three Champions League outings. He is crucial to Manchester City this term.
Joining City in 2019 from Valencia for a fee of £55million (Mail), Cancelo has been sensational this term – and is now just 12 away from 100 games.
According to WhoScored, the Portugal international made more interceptions than any of his teammates – and was second in tackles.
He is crucial to Pep Guardiola’s City – offer versatility as a right-back, left-back or a holding midfielder. He is getting better and better at City.
City icon de Jong is clearly a fan. Following the big 5-1 win over Brugge, in which Cancelo scored, de Jong labelled him as one of the best in the world.
Is Manchester City star Cancelo the best right-back in football?
There are little other options to suggest otherwise, though Joshua Kimmich is right up there. The Bayern star can also play in midfield, like Cancelo.
Achraf Hakimi of Inter Milan is getting better and better and has the potential to overtake his opponents. But it is hard to look past Cancelo.
He’s incredibly consistent and right now, is churning out an 8/10 display every week. Not only that, but he’s adding goals and assists, too.
De Jong is right, he does go under the radar slightly – but that could suit him. But as his form continues, he will certainly come under the spotlight more.
