Nigel Clough ‘delighted’ as Oliver Sarkic scores first goal since Leeds United exit

This summer saw Leeds United move on plenty of players, including those in the under-23 picture. One of those who was told to find a new home was Oliver Sarkic.

Leeds allowed Sarkic to cancel his contract at Thorp Arch in order to make the move to Burton on a one-year deal.

Last night, the 22-year-old took his first step toward proving Leeds wrong by scoring his first goal for the Brewers.

Sarkic netted the opening goal as Burton defeated Premier League side Bournemouth in the EFL Cup. He also provided the assist for Nathan Broadhead to score the second.

Speaking to the Derby Telegraph after the game, Burton boss Nigel Clough expressed his delight at Sarkic’s performance but admitted he is now hoping for more from the player.

“With his quality, he should be getting more goals and assists.

“He has scored one and made one tonight, so we’re all delighted he’s got his first one for us.”

TBR’s View

Leeds United fans were fairly excited when Sarkic joined the club. With previous experience at top clubs like Anderlecht and Benfica, he looked a top prospect for the future at Elland Road.

However, injury and an unproductive loan spell in Spain saw him fall down the pecking order in the under-23s and Leeds were happy to let him go this summer. In August, in conversation with Sport/Voetbalmagazine, he appeared to aim a dig at Marcelo Bielsa regarding a deterioration of the relationship between the under-23s and the senior Leeds team.

Sarkic will now hope this is the spark toward an extended run of form in League One. Perhaps he can go on to prove Leeds wrong for letting him go.
