Tottenham Hotspur have supposedly joined the race to sign Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella.

The Lilywhites are reported by Calciomercato to hold an interest in the Italian international, whose stock has soared over in Serie A after a brilliant campaign in 2017/18, and an exciting start this term.

Barella is highly coveted, with Arsenal apparently having sent scounts to watch him with Aaron Ramsey set to leave the Emirates Stadium at the end of the season.

Liverpool and Manchester United have also been linked with the 21-year-old, valued at £27 million by Transfemarkt  (although clubs will surely have to stump up significantly more than that).

With Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama both looking likely to leave the club in one of the next two windows, Mauricio Pochettino may feel a strong desire to seal this potential deal.

Endorsed by Pirlo

If Spurs needed a push to make a move for Barella, then surely it would come in the form of an endorsement from the great Andrea Pirlo.

The Italian legend believes his fellow countryman is the next big thing. He said earlier this year, as quoted by The Daily Mail: “He is one of the best players in Italy. I really enjoyed him against Milan. He only needs to find the right place in the field.”

An ideal replacement for Dembele

Barella has developed into a brilliant box-to-box midfield player since joining Cagliari in 2015.

Tottenham look like they’ll be losing one in Dembele, and Barella would be an excellent replacement.

He has a superb engine, and his ability to close down and snuff out attacks is reminiscent of Arsenal’s Lucas Torreira and Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante.

Spurs will need to move fast, because he’ll surely attract a lot of attention when the transfer window opens.
