Nicolas Pepe's late season form has just saved Arsenal a fortune this summer - TBR View

Arsenal are heading into the summer with a bit of momentum behind them and it’s thanks in part to the impressive form of Nicolas Pepe.

The Gunners finished the campaign with five Premier League wins in a row, something which has arguably snuck under the radar a bit. Among those wins was a 1-0 triumph over Chelsea, so there’s no point in saying the other four were games they should have won.

Key to those wins has been some continuity from Mikel Arteta in terms of team selection. Further, a number of players have really stepped up to the plate, and none more so than Nicolas Pepe.

The Ivorian winger, who is due to see his salary go up to £140k-a-week next season (per Spotrac), has been as influential as anyone.

Pepe has rattled in five goals in in those five wins, including doubles in the final two games of the season. It’s taken his season total to 16 goals in all competitions. A number not be sniffed at for any player.

Arsenal should trust Pepe and re-invest elsewhere

For a few seasons now, the question has been who can Arsenal get to replace Nicolas Pepe. After all, this is a player they paid over £70m for, so questions were always going to be asked.

However, Pepe is still just 25. He’s finally appearing to turn the corner and with another summer of coaching under Mikel Arteta, then the sky could be the limit for the Ivorian star.

Further, if Arsenal did want to sell, they’d not get that £70m-odd back. Nowhere near, in fact. In addition, they’d also need to then find a replacement for Pepe, which, in turn, would cost a fortune.

So, while Nicolas Pepe might not have always lit the stage up since arriving in North London, now is the time for the Gunners to back their man.

And with a big summer ahead, Pepe’s late season form and upturn in overall performance levels could have just saved the club a fortune.
