Nicol issues Arsenal with warning as they pursue Joao Felix deal

Steve Nicol has told ESPN that Arsenal need to be careful if they decide to sign Joao Felix in the January transfer window, warning that it could ruin their Premier League title hopes if the move does not work out.

January is going to be a fascinating month for the Gunners. They now sit eight points clear at the top of the table. So clearly, they have an amazing opportunity to achieve something very special this season.

Mikel Arteta’s men have had a warning, with Gabriel Jesus facing months out due to injury. And with that, it would be no surprise at all to see Arsenal sign at least one attacking player next month.

Nicol warns Arsenal about making Joao Felix move

A bid for Mykhaylo Mudryk has reportedly been made. But another attacker linked with the Emirates is Felix. Reports from 90min suggested that Arsenal have held talks with Atletico Madrid over a potential deal for the 23-year-old.

Atleti are open to loaning the forward out. However, they want a clause which would pave the way towards a £100 million permanent move.

Understandably, that is seen as a stumbling block for Arsenal – as well as his other admirers.

Felix has not been at his best since moving to the Spanish capital. But he is a ‘very special‘ talent. So there is a chance that he could prove to be an inspired addition if a deal can be agreed.

However, Nicol has warned that it is a real gamble for Arsenal to sign the Portuguese.

“If you do bring a Joao Felix in for example, he’s not coming there to sit on the bench. You can’t not play Martinelli, you can’t not play Saka. Do you play Felix through the middle? It’s such a fine balancing act,” he told ESPN.

“I think of Newcastle back in the 90s when they signed Tino Asprilla. And it completely messed everything up. The way they were playing was similar to Arsenal, it was all flowing, it was all easy. Everybody knew their job. And then, when they made that change, it kind of fell apart and they ended up losing the league to Manchester United. So you have to be careful when you bring somebody in.”

It would be a real surprise if Arsenal were ready to make a bid that involved a future £100 million move. Felix could be an unbelievable talent. But he has not exactly shown that during his time in Diego Simeone’s side.

While Mudryk will not come cheap, he is someone who looks set to improve for years to come. And he is already thriving for Shakthar Donetsk.

If a move for Felix works out for Arsenal, he could definitely be worth the money. But there is an argument that it would be too much of a risk for the Gunners.
