New Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has not yet managed to turn things around at Villa Park. Two defeats from his first three games suggest he will need the January transfer window to get his team into the shape he wants.
Of course, plenty of players will be linked with a move to Villa Park in the weeks to come. Undoubtedly, some of those will be former Smith players.
One who would be an excellent recruit is Nico Yennaris.
Now whilst not the most eye-catching of arrivals, Yennaris would bring a lot of qualities that Aston Villa need.
A loyal lieutenant to Smith at Griffin Park, the 25-year-old would bring a grit and determination that is missing from Aston Villa’s game. His never-say-die attitude in midfield and work rate would certainly compliment some of the more mercurial talents in the Aston Villa side.
Not only that, but the former Arsenal talent is extremely versatile. Equally adept at both right and left back, as well as in the heart of midfield, Yennaris would help solve Aston Villa’s strength in depth issues at full-back. One signing to add grit to midfield and cover in both full-back positions. That’s three birds with one stone.
On top of all this, Yennaris is unlikely to command a massive fee for Aston Villa.
Plenty of ‘sexier’ names will be linked with Aston Villa in the months to come. But bringing in Yennaris might be the no-nonsense decision Smith needs to turn the club’s fortunes around.
