Newcastle’s potential new owners have got to go after Mario Gotze – TBR View

Newcastle United’s new owners have reportedly made their mark in the upcoming transfer window by contacting agents of three big-name, out-of-contract players – but another should be on their list in the form of a World Cup winner.

Amanda Staveley’s bid to takeover from Mike Ashley looks set to go through, after being financially backed by the Suadi Arabia Public Investement Fund. They will own 80% of Newcastle, when the takeover goes through in the coming weeks.

ESPN claim that the new boardroom have already made contact with the likes of Napoli star Dries Mertens, PSG powerhouse Edinson Cavani and Chelsea winger Willian. But another freebie should also be on Newcastle’s shortlist.

Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mario Gotze has recently confirmed that he will be leaving the German club for a second time on a free transfer. Still only 27, Gotze has plummeted down the pecking order under Newcastle-linked Lucien Favre.

He told SportBild: “After intensive considerations, I decided to make a change in the sporting planning of my career. I deliberately took the necessary time for this step because it is an important step for me to set the course for the future.”

The Mirror reported in 2018 that Newcastle were one of five clubs to have registered an interest in signing 2014 World Cup winner Gotze, along with Arsenal, Everton, Leicester City and West Ham United. Now, he is available for nothing.

Though he is likely to command an expensive contract, surely Newcastle’s new owners should look to the World Cup final goalscorer if they are to bring in a big-name player. Available on a free, Gotze is likely to be open to a move to England.

Unlike Mertens, Cavani or Willian, Gotze is the right side of 30 and that still makes him a very attractive propositon for interested parties going forward. Newcastle’s new owners have got to take advantage, especially after being linked in 2018.
