Newcastle’s long-term plans for Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa revealed as injury return dates emerges

TBR Football understands that Newcastle United have plans to play Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa together when the latter returns from injury.

Newcastle spent £65million on Woltemade during the summer, while Wissa joined from Brentford on deadline day after refusing to train or play for the Bees to force a move through.

While Woltemade debuted by scoring the winner against Wolves at the weekend, Newcastle fans have had to be patient since he suffered a knee injury on international duty.

The £55million signing has yet to make his debut for Newcastle, but when he does return, should fans expect him to play alongside Woltemade?

Newcastle United see Nick Woltemade as a number 10

Graeme Bailey – Chief Correspondent for TBR Football – has been told that Woltemade is very much seen as a number 10 type of player by Newcastle United.

So far, Howe has deployed him as a striker, but other clubs have previously seen him as an attacking midfielder.

“In England, we don’t usually associate six-foot-plus players with that role, but that’s how he is viewed.

“Bayern Munich nearly signed him with that in mind, not as an understudy to Harry Kane, but as a number 10, which speaks to the type of player he is.

“There is a possibility for Wissa and Woltemade to play together, but I don’t see Howe changing the team’s shape anytime soon.

“Jacob Ramsey could operate in the number 10 role, and Newcastle have been missing a true number 10 for some time. To a degree, that still remains the case. For now, the midfield three looks set, with Joelinton occupying that central role.

“In the future, Woltemade is more likely to take the number 10 position, while Wissa plays as a central striker. That combination will be interesting to watch, but for most of this season, I don’t expect a change in the system.”

Wissa is set to play as Newcastle’s leading striker, which is what Newcastle fans anticipated when signing him, but the possibility of using Woltemade in different positions will make the team more flexible.

What games will Yoane Wissa miss for Newcastle United?

Howe recently confirmed that Wissa won’t be back for Newcastle United until after the next international break, which means the former Brentford star will miss some important games.

He will be unavailable for this weekend’s Premier League fixture against Bournemouth and will also miss clashes against Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in the forthcoming weeks.

Wissa will also be unavailable for Newcastle’s upcoming game against Bradford City, as the Magpies begin their journey toward trying to retain the EFL Cup this season.

Finally, he will miss the next Champions League fixture against Union Saint-Gilloise. If everything goes to plan, his potential return will be against Brighton on October 18th.
