Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Rob Holding had seemingly already been dealt a major blow when the Daily Mail reported this week that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was considering keeping the centre-back this season.
It had appeared that Holding was on his way to St James’ Park. TalkSPORT reported last month that the two clubs had reached an agreement, and confirmation of the 24-year-old’s loan was imminent.

The Daily Mail subsequently suggested this week that the Magpies were waiting to see if Arsenal experienced a further change of heart with the move now in doubt. Holding has reportedly impressed Arteta in pre-season, and the Gunners boss is considering holding onto him.
And it now appears that Newcastle landing Holding is looking even more unlikely.

The Telegraph has reported that David Luiz could be out for at least a month due to a neck injury. However, worryingly, the report suggests he will undergo further assessment before a more accurate timeframe is put on his return.
It is a big setback for Arsenal. Luiz was excellent during the final weeks of last season. The Brazilian appears to be relishing the leadership role he has under Arteta.
Arsenal have the options to cope without Luiz. And that may perhaps leave Newcastle believing that there is still hope for them.
But Holding has enjoyed a prominent role in pre-season. And he started alongside the former Chelsea man in the Community Shield.
If Luiz is going to be sidelined beyond the transfer deadline, it is surely much less likely that Arsenal will be willing to let Holding leave.
If Arteta was already considering whether he wanted to keep him, this blow could surely prove decisive.
