Newcastle would hope Eyibil fares better than Muto

Newcastle United are supposedly competing with West Ham United to sign Erkan Eyibil this summer.

Turkish-Football have reported that the Premier League duo have been alerted to the midfielder, who has been dubbed ‘the new Mesut Ozil’.

Eyibil has earned the comparison by showcasing an impressive technical game for the Mainz youth team, for whom he has 12 goals and five assists in just 18 games this term.

Worryingly for Mainz, the teenager has little over one year remaining on his current deal, meaning they could soon lose one of their prized assets.

TBR’s view

If Newcastle were able to beat West Ham and whoever else to the signing of the highly rated youngster, then they would hope he turns out a little better than the last player they signed from Mainz.

Yoshinori Muto joined the Magpies last summer in a £9.5 million deal (Chronicle Live), but has really struggled to make his mark for the club.

He has made 13 appearances for the club and only five starts in the Premier League.

Before playing eight minutes against Bournemouth last weekend, Muto had not featured since January 2 against Manchester United.

So far, his transfer simply hasn’t worked out and Rafa Benitez would hope that Eyibil would make better progress coming from Mainz than Muto has.
