Newcastle would have to smash transfer record to land star who is already loved at St. James’ Park

Newcastle smashed their transfer record in the summer with the signing of German striker Nick Woltemade in a £65million deal – and they’ve been told to do so again if they want to sign a star who is already loved in Tyneside.

Newcastle’s eight most expensive signings have all come in the Saudi Public Investment Fund era, with Alexander Isak previously topping that table.

Isak’s £59million Newcastle move was, however, eclipsed by Nick Woltemade’s £69million transfer from Stuttgart in the summer, and Newcastle have shown they aren’t afraid to spend money for Premier League success.

However, Eddie Howe will reportedly be made to part ways with a nine-figure sum if he wants to sign Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson – who he used 53 times before his move to the City Ground.

Newcastle United are ‘closely monitoring’ a return for Elliot Anderson

Elliot Anderson, a boyhood Newcastle fan, was forced out of St. James’ Park having made 55 appearances for the club, two of those being under Steve Bruce and the rest under Howe’s guidance.

The Magpies had run into PSR trouble, meaning Eddie Howe had to sell Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton before the June 30 deadline in 2024.

But now Newcastle want him back after some seriously impressive form, according to Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg.

The report states that Newcastle are ‘closely monitoring’ the Whitley Bay-born star, with interest already being registered over a romantic return to Tyneside.

Forest are aware of any interest, given Anderson is a key player for them. However, it’s thought that they will demand between £100million and £120million for him to depart, in a clear ‘hands off’ message to any suitors.

Manchester United are also thought to be keen, and many other unnamed ‘top clubs’ are in the mix.

Whether Newcastle will obliterate their transfer record to sign him remains to be seen, but as a boyhood fan with unfinished business, it’s clear to see why they’re in the race.

Eddie Howe already regrets selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest

Elliot Anderson has since gone on to star for Nottingham Forest, playing in all but one Premier League game last season and featuring heavily in the current campaign, earning plaudits along the way.

That has garnered four England caps, and Anderson has been tipped to claim a World Cup space under Thomas Tuchel.

With Newcastle selling Anderson for £35million, paying £100million would instantly wipe out the profit they made on Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool, where they doubled their money on the Swedish attacker.

Anderson may find it tough to break into a midfield trio of Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, but that midfield depth would be ideal for Howe if Newcastle are to be a consistent Champions League side.
