Newcastle United managed to retain the services of Fabian Schar this summer without any real hassle – but they’ll be lucky to keep a hold of him for much longer the way things are going.
The Switzerland international has made a great start to the new season for the Magpies, starting every league game so far.
The ace got himself on the scoresheet last time out against Watford by surging forward, and was also on target for his country last week in the Euro 2020 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.
Not only is Schar continually proving himself as an attacking defender, but he has also received praise for his grasp of the fundamentals of being a centre-half.
Schar was signed for just £3 million – the value of his release clause – from Deportivo La Coruna last summer (BBC Sport), but perhaps Newcastle should start preparing themselves for offers way in excess of that.
Schar has been something of a revelation since joining Newcastle.
The 27-year-old was superb under Rafa Benitez and has continued his great form with Steve Bruce now at the helm.
Schar appears to have all the traits appreciated by big clubs in a modern-day centre-back. He is a strong passer of the ball who seeks to break the lines rather than play safe.
He is decent aerially and his eye for goal is obvious.
Newcastle were lucky not to lose him this summer, but it is surely only a matter of time now before a European heavyweight swoops.
