Newcastle United fans will be breathing a sigh of relief that they didn’t splash big money on Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.
The French midfielder was a summer target for Newcastle, as well as West Ham and Watford, but Fulham won the race for his signature.
And according to the Sky Sports News report at the time, it cost the Cottagers £22.3m to land him.
Admittedly it is early days yet, but this move already looks to have all the hallmarks of an expensive mistake.
The 22-year-old has not settled into life in England as quickly as Slavisa Jokanovic would have liked and Fulham are struggling as a result.
Many Fulham players are taking a while to settle at Craven Cottage. They simply cannot afford for them to spend much more time adjusting to the Premier League.
Jokanovic’s men are at the bottom of the Premier League and staring relegation in the face.
In contrast, Newcastle picked up their first win of the season at the weekend to move up the league table.
The Magpies are out of the relegation zone on goal difference and looking upwards after turning around their fortunes.
And they seem to have dodged a bullet by missing out on Anguissa.
With Ki Sung-yeung and Jonjo Shelvey in form, Newcastle have better options in that department.
With Mike Ashley keeping a close eye on the purse-strings, Newcastle could not have afforded to shell that money on a player who takes time to adjust.
