Fabrizio Romano has told Que Golazo that Newcastle United were obsessed with Christian Pulisic during the summer transfer window, but failed to agree a deal with Chelsea keen to sell the American permanently.
Perhaps surprisingly, Pulisic remains a Chelsea player beyond the end of the window. The 24-year-old has not had the easiest time at Stamford Bridge.

And he is actually yet to complete 90 minutes in any competition this season. In fact, only one of his appearances have seen the attacking midfielder stay on the pitch for longer than half an hour.
Nevertheless, he did attract attention in the window. Reports in the summer noted that Chelsea were aware that Newcastle wanted the USMNT international.

And Romano has now provided a further update on how keen Eddie Howe was to land the former Borussia Dortmund star – and why no move took place.
“Strong interest from Newcastle. Newcastle were obsessed with Christian,” he told Que Golazo. “They wanted him. But they wanted him on loan and not on a permanent deal. They wanted him on loan, maybe with a buy option, not mandatory. And this is why Chelsea decided to say no.”
Newcastle were obsessed with Pulisic
Newcastle did make a big statement in the final days of the window. The Magpies smashed their transfer record on Alexander Isak. However, they probably did not do as much as they would have liked in the final third.
And with that, it would be no surprise if this was not the last we heard of Pulisic – who has been labelled ‘fantastic‘ – and Newcastle.
Much will depend on how Graham Potter uses Pulisic. But Newcastle have the means to make a big offer in January.
Dortmund fans never really got to see what Isak and Pulisic could do together. They were on the pitch at the same time just five times.
Perhaps Newcastle supporters will get that chance in the future.
