Report: Newcastle looking to sign striking 'genius' who has scored more than a goal a game this season

Newcastle United have reportedly got Czech Republic and Bayer Leverkusen star, Patrik Schick, on their radar as they look to make a new signing in the striker department this January.

That’s according to Sky Sports, who reported live on air today that Schick is among the striking options being considered by Eddie Howe and Newcastle. The Czech star is among a host of names being looked at by the Magpies.

PIF and Eddie Howe are desperate to get a new forward in the building. Callum Wilson is facing eight weeks out and the threat of relegation is becoming increasingly real at St James’ Park. Schick, then, could well prove a good option for the club to consider.

Described as a ‘genius’ by Czech coach Jaroslav Silhavy, the Leverkusen star certainly has credentials. This season alone he is flying. Rather impressively, he is averaging more than a goal a game in the Bundesliga. His 17 goals in 15 games putting him right among the very best in Germany.

DIVOCK ORIGI DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

And Sky (via Football Daily) have claimed that Schick is a target for Newcastle. However, he won’t come cheap. He has three years to run on his deal in Leverkusen. It means the German side can hold out for big money, especially as they know Newcastle’s new found wealth is sat there.

TBR’s View: Patrik Schick A Proven Striker For Newcastle

As we keep saying, whoever comes in for Newcastle in January needs to hit the ground running. And while Schick doesn’t have Premier League experience, he’s one of Europe’s most in-form strikers.

17 in 15 is some going, even if it is in the Bundesliga. He clearly knows where the net is, and his 17 in 33 for the Czech Republic is a further demonstration of this.

On paper, Schick stands out more than some of the others Newcastle have been linked with. On that basis, he’d be a smart signing if they could pull it off.
