Report: Newcastle want 'devastating' £58m attacker with West Ham and four more clubs willing to bid
Newcastle United are thought to be keen on signing Chelsea striker Armando Broja this summer, but face competition from West Ham and more to do so.
Broja has enjoyed a stellar first full season of Premier League football on loan with Southampton. The striker began the season in red hot form before dipping off somewhat in recent months. Indeed, that interest is said to have attracted admiring glances from Arsenal along the way.
Goal reports how Newcastle, West Ham, and Southampton are keen. While over in Italy, AC Milan, Inter, and Napoli are also thought to be keeping tabs on Broja. The striker is highly-rated by Chelsea, and there’s even been talk of a fee of around £58m being wanted by the Blues should they sell.
Newcastle are expected to bring in new players this summer. However, the predicted spending is said to be considerably less than first thought, with Eddie Howe set to target specific positions.
TBR’s View: Broja A Gamble For Newcastle But One That Could Pay Off
Broja has shown enough signs this season that he is a player ready to tackle the Premier League head on again next season. The goals might have dried up a bit, but that’s coincided with Southampton themselves tailing off somewhat.
For Newcastle, this would be a good signing, albeit one with a bit of risk involved. Broja is still a young man learning his craft, so if the Mags want a ready-made striker in the number nine slot, then Broja might not be the man just yet.
Further, the big asking price and competition from Europe could mean spending too big on a player not guaranteed to do the business.
