Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos this summer as the Colombian continues to shine under Steven Gerrard – and Michael Owen predicted interest in the striker back in November.
The Daily Star claims Steve Bruce is on the lookout for a new striker and is keen on signing Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard, as well as Rangers hothead Morelos. The 23-year-old has scored 29 goals this season, and laid on another 10 assists.
His form was the backdrop of a stunning first half to the 2019-20 campaign for Rangers. But the former HJK Helsinki star’s drop off since the winter break has coincided with Rangers lack of results on the pitch.
However, Bruce is still keen to give Morelos a go in the Premier League – even despite Gerrard stating he would not sell Morelos in January for £50million – and ex-Toon striker Owen lavished praise on the striker in November, predicting interest.
“This fella is just their talisman. He is everything that’s good about this team,” Owen told BT Sport (December 12, 10.30pm). “He’s strong, scores goals and I know lots of clubs will be looking at him. Steven Gerrard will be delighted that he’s in his team.”
TBR’s view – Would Newcastle match Morelos’ ambition?
It is clear the Colombian has enough potential to go on and have an excellent career in Europe. The Premier League has got to be the physical forward’s ideal environment to shine, and a move to the Toon could be ideal.
Proving himself to the big-boys, Morelos could go to Tyneside for two or even three years to show what he is capable of – before being linked with a move to the heavyweights. Much like Raul Jimenez at Wolves, though he has helped turn Wolves into a force of their own.
