Newcastle want Barcelona player with £421m release clause - report
Newcastle United have reportedly set their sights on Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti.
The Magpies are in need of bolstering their ranks in the January transfer window.
Although Newcastle are improving under Eddie Howe, they’ve got work to do to escape the relegation zone.
Defence is an area that the Magpies must strengthen, and according to The Sun, Umtiti is now a target.
The France international has fallen out of favour at his club, and has played just 90 minutes all season.
Umtiti has endured bad luck with injuries in the past
This season he’s been available, but has had to make do with a spot on the bench most of the time.
In addition, Barca are reportedly desperate to offload Umtiti’s £220,000-a-week wages.
Newcastle, with their newly-acquired financial muscle, could certainly afford the 28-year-old.
And he’d definitely be a superb defensive reinforcement for the Magpies.
Despite his bad luck in recent years, Umtiti is a player of the highest calibre.
He has won 11 trophies during his career including the 2018 World Cup and two La Liga titles.
Umtiti has clocked up 133 appearances for Barca, and 31 France caps.
He was previously linked with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.
And when Barca renewed his contract in 2018, it included a 500m euro (£421m) release clause.
