Newcastle United reportedly want to sign Swansea City winger Dan James in a £10m deal, according to The Chronicle.
The Wales international has enjoyed a sensational breakthrough season. With only one appearance to his name this season, few would have predicted his rapid rise to stardom.
James has scored five and assisted 10 goals for mid-table Championship side Swansea City. Now a Premier League transfer is on the horizon.
Newcastle will be hoping to win the race for the 21-year-old, although plenty of other clubs will be lining up bids.
But James’ arrival at St James’ Park could potentially be bad news for another Newcastle winger. Where does that leave Jacob Murphy?
After Miguel Almiron joined in January, Newcastle let Murphy leave on loan. The 24-year-old spent the second half of the season at West Brom and is currently preparing for the play-offs.
He has scored twice and provided one assist in 13 games for the promotion-chasing Baggies. But he has struggled at Newcastle.
Murphy has mainly been used as an impact substitute since his move from Norwich City. But with just one goal and three assists in 41 games, Newcastle would have hoped for more.
If James joins Newcastle, this pushes Murphy further down the pecking order. He would face a battle to save his Newcastle career and could face a permanent exit.
