‘I told my agent’: Newcastle-linked 27-year-old explains summer plan
Jetro Willems has told Chronicle Live that it would be ‘great’ to re-join Newcastle United after leaving Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Dutch defender, who spent the first half of the 2019/20 season on loan at St James’ Park, will leave the Bundesliga outfit once his contract expires at the end of the month.
Frankfurt offered Williams the chance to extend his stay at the Deutsche Bank Park but he rejected the terms. He now intends to sit down with his agent to discuss his summer plans once he returns from holiday.
It is the first break Willems has enjoyed in two years after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in January 2020. The injury kept the 27-year-old sidelined for 12-months and cut short his Newcastle loan spell.
Willems returned to fitness this January but failed to make an appearance for Frankfurt before the end of the season. A return to St James’ may now emerge, with Newcastle weighing up a move for the defender (Sunderland Echo)
“Of course, Newcastle is a very nice option for me,” Willems said. “I was there for a long time – like, half a year – and I was enjoying the moment there. It’s a great option and it’s a club which knows me, I know them. It would be great to join them.
“To be honest, I don’t know where everything stands right now. I told my agent – I’m at CAA Base now, a UK agency – I want to go on vacation first and then when I come back, I’ll speak about clubs, the clubs he has interested and what is going on.”
TBR’s view: Newcastle should explore Willems return
Newcastle explored bringing Willems back to St James’ in January only for Steve Bruce to have concerns over his fitness. The Dutchman has since got fit on the Frankfurt fringes and would have a full pre-season to readjust to United.
The Magpies may have other targets in mind to strengthen Bruce’s options at full-back now. But Willems should be considered, as he seemingly wants the move and there is a mutual respect with the club.
Newcastle are also not blessed with a budget to go out and land a top-draw signing in every position. Bruce is working on restricted funds as he refreshes his ranks, so adding a known quantity for free makes sense.
