Newcastle target who Klopp loves is set for Old Trafford switch - report

Newcastle United were linked with Ralf Rangnick in wake of the club’s takeover, but it looks as though the Magpies have missed out on the 63-year-old.

Chronicle Live reported in October that Rangnick was put forward to Newcastle as an option to become director of football at St James’ Park.

Rangnick was understood to be open to the challenge of an executive role at Newcastle, added the outlet.

However, it now looks as though Manchester United are set to land Rangnick instead of the Magpies.

Multiple media outlets, including BBC Sport and Sky Sports, have claimed that Rangnick is to become interim manager at Old Trafford until the end of the season.

In addition, discussions are ongoing over Rangnick potentially remaining at Old Trafford for two years beyond the end of the season in a consultancy role.

Rangnick is currently at Lokomotiv Moscow and the Red Devils are reportedly still in talks with the Russian club over an agreement to release him.

Newcastle set to miss out on Jurgen Klopp’s inspiration?

Rangnick’s CV, as both a manager and a director, is superb.

At Hoffenheim, he achieved successive promotions to lead the club to the Bundesliga.

At Schalke, meanwhile, he won the 2011 DFB-Pokal and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

And at Red Bull, he turned their clubs into domestic powerhouses and conveyor belts of talent, sold for big profits and replaced by more superb prospects.

Rangnick also invented Gegenpressing and is credited for influencing Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralph Hasenhuttl, and Jurgen Klopp.

The Liverpool boss is quoted by ESPN as saying Rangnick is “one of the best, if not the best German coach”.
