Newcastle United should swoop for Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips post-takeover – TBR View

Leeds United fans will no doubt have some fears regarding the long-term future of Kalvin Phillips at Elland Road in the next transfer window. That will be particularly true if they fail to win promotion to the Premier League, whether through their own means or because of the current global health crisis.

Plenty of big teams have been credited with an interest in Leeds United’s midfield general. Liverpool? Tottenham Hotspur? Anyone of them would represent a threat to Leeds’ chances of keeping Phillips.

But what about Newcastle United?

A few months ago, fairly laughable.

Leeds United would feel they are on par, or above, with Newcastle in everything but leagues.

But that is about to change. Newcastle are set to become a financial powerhouse after a Saudi-backed £300 million takeover.

Which could mean bad news for Leeds.

Phillips is already on Newcastle’s radar. As reported by The Mirror last summer, Newcastle were keen on signing the £30 million rated star.

At the time, the Magpies would have struggled to secure his services but post-takeover that will not be an issue.

Leeds fans will, of course, protest that Phillips would not make a sideways step to St James’ Park.

But should the Whites not get promoted, with the money on offer and the exciting project in place at a Premier League club, Phillips would find it hard not to accept a move should a mega-rich Newcastle United come calling.
