Newcastle United have not broken transfer record since 2005

Newcastle United fans are fairly happy with the work going into the team on the pitch at St James’ Park. The Magpies are under incredible management under Rafa Benitez and, on the whole, most of the players at Newcastle give their best for the Spanish manager.

However, fans at Newcastle are less than pleased with how the club is being run off of it. Mike Ashley has long been an unwanted presence among many of the Newcastle fanbase.

His financial success off the pitch with Sports Direct has Newcastle fans scratching their heads at what they see as a lack of investment in the football club.

If there was even an indicator of this fact, it is the club’s record transfer.

Newcastle United’s most expensive buy remains the 2005 deal to sign Michael Owen from Real Madrid for £17 million conducted by former chairman Sir Freddy Shepherd.

It was a deal that, in the end, proved unsuccessful owing to the England striker’s miserable run of injuries.

But compared to the rest of the Premier League, such a long time without breaking the transfer record is unheard of. Of the 19 other teams, only Brighton and Cardiff City’s is of a lesser figure. Cardiff’s £11 million signing of Gary Medel in 2013 is the only other record not broken in the past two years.

It is easy to see why Newcastle fans are left disappointed with the transfer business being done by the club’s board.
