Ross Wilson’s first major task at Newcastle United is likely to be finalising a new long-term deal for Sven Botman, TBR Football understands.

Wilson has become sporting director at St James’ Park, arriving from Nottingham Forest, and already has a number of things on his ‘to-do list’ and he has to hit the ground running.

One of those he is looking to lock down is Botman – who has just over 18 months left on his current deal. Since joining from Lille in 2022, Botman has established himself in the North East as a top Premier League performer.

The Dutchman suffered from an ACL injury in 2024 but has battled back to full fitness and now looks back to his best in the heart of Eddie Howe’s defence.

Howe has made it clear that he wants Botman to stay, and Wilson is already looking at talks, which the club began in the summer.

Now they will be accelerated, and TBR Football understands that fresh terms could even be done by January.

Exclusive: Sven Botman to be first of Newcastle contract renewals

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey has exclusively revealed that Newcastle are confident that Botman is ready to extend his stay in the North East, and the defender is set to be the first of several first-team players who are in line for new deals.

The Magpies are eager for smooth negotiations as the 25-year-old has become a realistic target for other clubs and has attracted plenty of interest.

Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan have both looked closely at Botman previously and maintained a watching brief on his progress in England, whilst Chelsea and Manchester City are also known to have been admirers.

TBR Football has previously revealed that Newcastle intend to agree new deals for Tino Livramento and Sandro Tonali before next summer’s World Cup finals.

Botman was deemed as important as Alexander Isak, who, of course, completed a British transfer record departure to Liverpool on deadline day, and Newcastle are eager to reward the centre-back for his contributions.

He has featured eight times already this season after playing the same amount of Premier League games last season, and Botman has emphasised his importance to Howe, who hopes to make the player the future of his defence at St James’ Park.

Newcastle have 11 players out of contract in 2026

Wilson will be a very busy man in the North East between now and the end of the season with so many players at Newcastle facing uncertain futures.

While Botman will be the first point of call for the new sporting director, the centre-back is one of 11 players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the campaign.

It is likely that not all of those will be offered an extended stay at St James’ Park, but the list of expiring players features multiple regular first-team starters.
