Newcastle United are considering making a club record attempt to try and sign Rennes winger Ismaila Sarr, according to French publication L’Equipe.
The report suggests that Premier League rivals Watford have already had a bid of £27 million rejected by the French outfit, but an improvement could be made by Newcastle
Boss Rafa Benitez only smashed the club’s record transfer fee in January. The £20 million signing of Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United eclipsed the fee paid to Real Madrid for Michael Owen in 2005.
Sarr would represent some decent business for Newcastle if a deal can be struck. The 21-year-old speed demon netted 13 goals and registered 11 assists in all competitions last season.
Rafa Benitez is yet to have his own future sorted out. Just 12 days remain on his current deal and the fact he is highlighting transfer targets looks like a good sign in terms of him receiving an extension.
It does seem perhaps strange that Newcastle are pursuing targets when a change in manager could take place in the next fortnight.
Sarr is clearly a Benitez target, but if he does leave a new incumbent may not want him.
Spending some money on players will delight the Newcastle faithful.
At £30 million Sarr would still represent value for money. He is young, determined and possesses the sort of star quality that the Magpies should be attracting.
A Senegal international, the 21-year-old could prove a quality signing for Newcastle.
Benitez bemoaned his wide options last season and some genuine class out there could really revive the Magpies next season.
