- EXCLUSIVE with Graeme Bailey
Newcastle United have been looking for a new winger for a little while now.
Newcastle looked at signing Anthony Elanga on deadline day, while Eddie Howe’s side have also been linked with Leroy Sane.
Now, Newcastle are eyeing another wide attacking option as they try to bolster their frontline.
Indeed, Newcastle are looking at signing one of the most promising young wingers in Europe in the shape of Johan Bakayoko.
Bakayoko was linked with Liverpool in the summer.

Newcastle interested in Johan Bakayoko
TBR Football understands that Belgian winger Johan Bakayoko is one of the options being considered by Newcastle United to bolster their attacking options in January.
The Belgian winger has long been linked with a move to England.
Brentford made and failed with a bid last summer, whilst Arsenal and Liverpool have long been keeping tabs on his situation.
Newcastle are looking at a other right-sided options including the likes of Bryan Mbuemo and Anthony Elanga, and now TBR Football understands that Bakayoko is a player the Tyneside club have been assessing since the summer.
Newcastle, who are planning to move on Miguel Almiron, continue to have Profit and Sustainability worries – which led to the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson last summer. These rules are a major consideration before they do any business this January.
Newcastle weren’t big spenders in the summer, as they kept the pursestrings tight during the transfer window.
| Newcastle summer signings | Fee |
| John Ruddy | Free |
| Lloyd Kelly | Free |
| Odysseas Vlachodimos | £20m |
| Will Osula | £10m |
Ideally, Newcastle want a new central defender and a right-sided forward – but we are told it is not straightforward for them to do it.
Johan Bakayoko compared to Anthony Gordon
With the right players, wingers can be so important to how an Eddie Howe side operates.
Anthony Gordon has been on fire over the past 18 months or so, but Newcastle haven’t had that same quality down the right flank.
Bakayoko is now a potential target for Newcastle, and this young man looks like the real deal.
Bakayoko’s stats this season match up well against Gordon’s and if Newcastle can add that extra level of threat to their attack, they still be a seriously scary proposition in an attacking sense.
| Anthony Gordon stats this season | Johan Bakayoko stats this season | |
| Games | 10 | 11 |
| Goals | 2 | 4 |
| Assists | 1 | 0 |
| Dribbles per game | 1.3 | 2.2 |
| Shots per game | 1.5 | 2.4 |
Whether or not Newcastle end up signing Bakayoko remains to be seen, but this would be a very exciting addition if the Magpies could get this one over the line.
