Newcastle United have been rocked by the news that defender Florian Lejeune has suffered another serious knee injury.
The 27-year-old missed the start of the season having picked up another knee injury during pre-season.
Lejeune’s bad luck was confirmed on Instagram as he broke the news of a similar injury but in his other knee.
His message will come as a massive disappointment to Newcastle who will be without the central defender until the end of the season.
Lejeune signed for Newcastle in 2017 for £8.7 million from Eibar, according to The Guardian.
He has returned to fitness this season playing 11 Premier League games for the Magpies.
Benitez could do with a couple more wins to be totally sure of avoiding the drop and this news is a blow for the squad.
“After a medical examination, the injury I suffered during the last game is an anterior cruciate ligament injury. It’s the same problem I had a few months back but on the other knee. I’ll have surgery and as I did before, I will make my best to come back stronger. Thank you all for your support.”
This is a significant blow to Newcastle’s season.
Lejeune had revived himself since returning from a previous knee injury and this is proof that football can sometimes be cruel.
The centre-back was just starting to win over his manager and now he will be forced to sit in the stands whilst someone else stakes a claim for his shirt.
For Newcastle fans the hope will be that his recovery goes well and he can be back on the pitch as soon as possible.
