Newcastle United fans will hope club put buy-back clause in Adam Armstrong deal

Newcastle United’s decision to sell Adam Armstrong to Blackburn Rovers back in 2018 was not met with widespread praise by fans. Once dubbed the next Wayne Rooney, the England youth-team star left in a deal reportedly (The Chronicle) worth around £1.75 million.

Now, according to Lancashire Live, Newcastle could be interested in bringing him back to St James’ Park.

The reasons why are clear. Armstrong is finally showcasing the incredible talent he always had in his locker at Ewood Park this season. With 12 goals and seven assists from 39 games, Armstrong has been one of the Championship’s standout performers this season.

It was Rafa Benitez who sold Armstrong and, as reported by The Chronicle not long after, the Spaniard made it clear he had no regrets about selling the attacker.

“Sometimes you have to think about the best for everyone.

“When a young player has no chance of playing too many minutes in the team it is important for him and everybody around him to realise he has to play.

“He has to play and compete, that is the only way he will improve and grow as a player.”

But what is worrying many Newcastle fans is the fact there has been no mention of any buy-back clause making a deal more likely.

Instead, it would appear Newcastle would have to pay the eight-figure fee Blackburn are said to want for Armstrong by the initial Lancs Live report.

Considering the form Armstrong had shown with the England youth teams and out on loan spells, not including such a clause seems like a big error from Newcastle if indeed, as it seems, one does not exist.

Now they will have to pay at least £10 million for the player if they want to bring him back to St James’ Park in the summer.
