Newcastle United’s return to the Premier League did not go according to plan, as the Magpies fell to defeat against Tottenham Hotspur and had captain Jonjo Shelvey sent off in the process.
Spurs dismantled United’s defence, the Magpies failing time after time to stick to their man, and eventually ran out 2-0 winners at St James’ Park.
The game had a lot of talking points, Shelvey’s dismissal after stamping on Dele Alli, which has received a lot of criticism since, the biggest. However, some Newcastle fans felt aggrieved that England international Harry Kane didn’t see red for his tackle on Florian Lejeune.
Kane lunged in, scissoring the Frenchman’s left leg, and received a yellow card. The challenge was late, from behind and reckless, another referee on another day may have shown the striker a red instead.
The defender was substituted as a result of the tackle and is expected to miss two or three weeks due to ligament damage.
The result has left Benitez with a lot to think about, including strengthening his squad. After Sunday’s defeat the Newcastle manager told the Telegraph he wants to sign five more players before the transfer window closes.
Bristol City defender Joe Bryan is the latest name to be linked with the club, but most fans are more interested in Joselu. The out-of-favour Stoke striker has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle. Sky Sports have reported that personal terms have been agreed and a medical has been completed.
The majority of fans appear pleased with Joselu’s imminent move. However, some are not so impressed.
Benitez has until the end of August to source more players. However, in future seasons he may not have as much time.
Plans to change the window’s closing date to before the start of the season have been tabled to Premier League clubs. Teams outside the top-flight will also be discussing the topic in the future.
Rumours suggest that Newcastle will be voting against the new proposals, even though Benitez has said he does not like this part of the transfer window.
