Newcastle United are interested in securing a deal to sign Dominick Drexler this summer, according to German publication Kicker.
The Magpies will be keen to bolster their squad during the close season and the report claims that Drexler has been watched several times.
A 28-year-old, he operates in the number ten role and boasts 11 goals and 20 assists in the German Second Division with FC Koln this season.
It is claimed that Aston Villa and Cardiff have watched the player this season, but Newcastle would seemingly hold the aces given their Premier League status.

The Magpies are 14th in the top flight and if Rafa Benitez decides to stay at the club, he will hope to land several new recruits to progress the club.
Drexler only signed for Koln last summer from FC Midtjylland and given his form, they will surely want to recoup a sizeable fee for him.
TBR Verdict
This signing would be somewhat strange given the previous rumours that Newcastle were going to target younger players.
At 28, Drexler is unlikely to possess too much sell-on value and that might not help Benitez tempt Mike Ashley into parting with the cash.
There is little to doubt the quality which the German boasts, however. He would certainly be an interesting signing for the Magpies should a deal come to fruition.

To claim 20 assists in any professional division is decent and Newcastle could do with some more creativity in the final third.
Some players might depart St James’ Park this summer to make way for new recruits. Once the deadwood has been shifted Drexler could well be on his way to Newcastle and it will be interesting to see how he takes to the Premier League.
