Newcastle United defender who Howe thinks has ‘a lot to offer’ may need to find a new club in January – TBR View

Newcastle United have enjoyed a steady start to their Premier League season.

Eddie Howe’s side have only lost once in the league, and held champions Manchester City to an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Despite their vast resources, Newcastle didn’t go overboard with their recruitment this summer.

Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Matt Targett gave Howe more defensive options.

Meanwhile Alexander Isak was the show-stopping addition to the squad, breaking Newcastle’s transfer record.

The Magpies may not have shifted as many players as they would have wanted to, and Howe now has a big squad to manage.

One position in particular looks to be bloated in his squad, with Howe able to call on at least five players to play left-back.

Targett started the season as first-choice, before picking up a knock.

Howe decided to put centre-back Dan Burn on the left-hand side in his absence, before Targett returned.

The Carabao Cup offered Howe an opportunity to rotate his side, and Paul Dummett and Matt Ritchie both started the match.

This left Jamal Lewis as the only one of Howe’s options not to start a game this season.

And judging by Howe’s decisions, Lewis might need to leave in January if he wants to play football this season.

Lewis might need to leave Newcastle in January

Jamal Lewis now finds himself in a conundrum at Newcastle.

The left-back was offered opportunities to leave Tyneside this summer, with two Premier League sides interested in him.

There was also interest from Nice, however they eventually decided to go with Fulham’s Joe Bryan.

Eddie Howe believed that Lewis had ‘a lot to offer’, but his opportunities have been very limited.

In fact, Newcastle’s manager wouldn’t let him leave this summer, believing he was needed going into the season.

This decision might have been influenced by that injury to Targett, but he’s now back at full fitness.

It’s hard to see where Lewis’ minutes might come from this season.

Howe’s two favoured left-backs right now are Targett and Burn.

Dummett and Ritchie started the Carabao Cup game at centre-back and right-wing respectively.

This versatility is something that Lewis doesn’t have, and could make him less valuable in Howe’s eyes.

It now looks like Lewis will have to consider leaving Newcastle in January, either on loan or on a permanent deal.
