Newcastle United could be given the chance to land Thomas Robert his summer ahead of both Celtic and Rangers, according to the Chronicle.

The 19-year-old is currently on the books of Montpellier. Despite not making the step up into the first XI yet, Robert has impressed in youth league games.

Furthermore, he is the son of former Newcastle winger Laurent Robert, meaning a deal in the northeast could be something that is on the table.

Robert spent five seasons at St James’ Park and developed a reputation for scoring the spectacular. That knack endeared him to the Toon Army, who would no doubt be open to seeing what his son can do.

Thomas, who also plays as a wide player like his father, is set to be offered the chance to impress at St James this summer. Indeed, the Chronicle claim that Newcastle are already taking a keen interest in the youngster.

Given the history between the Robert family and Newcastle, the Magpies would be in pole position.

That position would be a blow to both Rangers and Celtic, who are both said to be keen on landing Robert themselves.

Sometimes things have a funny way of working out and it looks like Newcastle will be the ones to profit from the offspring of a former player having big talent.

While little is known about Thomas to the casual fan, his performances have been exceptional in the UEFA Youth Leagues.

Furthermore, he comes from good stock. Laurent Robert was a good Premier League player who was also capable of the spectacular.

If Newcastle can get just half as much out of Thomas as they did Laurent, then they’ll be getting a good player.
