Sky Sports pundit Clinton Morrison has described Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes as the best player on the pitch against Brentford.

The Magpies went into the Premier League game at St James’ Park hoping for back-to-back wins after a run of six league matches without a win.

And Newcastle started well, with Guimaraes opening the scoring for Eddie Howe’s side in the 21st minute.

Kieran Trippier delivered a superb cross to the back post. And the Brazilian broke away from his marker to head home.

Morrison, covering the game on Soccer Saturday, liked what he saw.

“Great ball by Trippier to the back post and Bruno Guimaraes has a free header,” he said. “It’s a great goal.”

Just seven minutes later, Jacob Murphy made the most of a David Raya error to double the Magpies’ lead.

The Bees keeper passed the ball to Callum Wilson, who squared to Murphy for a simple goal.

Though Newcastle dominated the first half, the visitors were quick out of the starting blocks after the interval.

They eventually halved the deficit through Ivan Toney, who scored a penalty awarded due to Dan Burn’s handball.

However, Newcastle soon restored their two-goal advantage, again through Guimaraes.

The £120,000-a-week star drove towards the edge of the box before drilling a great effort inside the near post.

And Morrison once again sung Guimaraes’ praises.

“Guimaraes has been the best player on the pitch today,” he said.

Newcastle went on to get two more in the latter stages of the match.

Eight minutes from time, Miguel Almiron pounced on Ethan Pinnock’s poor backpass to round Raya and tap into the empty net.

Then, in the 88th minute, Pinnock scored an own goal to make it 5-1 to the Tyneside outfit.

Joelinton crossed for Chris Wood, and the Brentford man, trying to block the delivery, put it through his own net.
