Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce is keen to sign Burnley outcast Ben Gibson, according to a report from Team Talk.
It is thought that Newcastle want to take the central defender on a season-long loan.
The left-sided centre-back joined the Clarets last summer for £15 million, according to The Sun, but has failed to make an impact.
Last season he made just one appearance in the Premier League.
After signing from Middlesbrough he was expected to hit the ground running at Turf Moor and earn international recognition.
That hasn’t transpired and Bruce could be about to offer him a chance to play regular football.
Should Gibson be allowed to leave Sean Dyche’s squad this summer, Newcastle won’t be the only interested party.
Aston Villa, Sheffield United and Norwich City would also be keen to do a deal, according to Team Talk.
At 26-years-old, Gibson wouldn’t be a bad signing for Newcastle.
His arrival would either hint at a departure or a change of system for Bruce, however.
Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles are currently the two first-choice central defenders and both were in good form last season.
If one of those doesn’t depart, it seems unlikely that Gibson would oust either of those two.
That could see Bruce go with three central defenders.
If that is the case, Gibson is an ideal capture due to the fact that he is naturally left-footed.
Bruce needs his signings to have an impact and excite supporters.
The ex-Middlesbrough man may have some work to do in order to win the supporters over, but he could prove a shrewd signing if Bruce can get him back to his best.
