Newcastle tried to sign Oxlade-Chamberlain from Liverpool in January
Newcastle tried to sign England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Liverpool during the January transfer window, as per the Times.
They report that the midfielder showed little interest in a move to Tyneside and the same would probably be true in the summer.
But the former Arsenal man is approaching the final year of his Anfield contract, which expires in the summer of 2023.
Chamberlain cost Liverpool £35 million, as per BBC, when he joined in August 2017 and his contract was dwindling then.
Liverpool decided to pay up to get him through the door but he has never started more than five straight games in a red shirt, according to the report.
Joelinton looks to have transformed into the same kind of box to box midfielder Chamberlain is at his best and that area of the pitch is no longer a priority for Eddie Howe.
For Chamberlain, plenty depends on whether he is currently content to be a squad player at a club who is right in the battle for everything there is to win.
Or, he could go somewhere, try and play more regularly and perhaps win his England place back with the World Cup coming up this winter.
As it stands, the only major international tournament he has played in is Euro 2012, and ten years on, he is currently not in the conversation for the Three Lions’ party for Qatar.
