According to reports emerging late last night, Newcastle could make a move for Brentford defender Pontus Jansson in January, with the Swedish star’s contract expiring in the summer.

According to The Guardian, Newcastle are among a cluster of teams looking on at how Jansson’s contract situation transpires with the Bees. At the moment, he is yet to agree terms and will see his current contract expire in the summer. Everton and Leicester are also said to be keen on the big defender.

Jansson, 30, has been a revelation for Brentford since arriving from Leeds. He helped the Bees to promotion before using his experience to ensure a solid start to life in the Premier League this term. The passionate defender has won 27 caps for Sweden, and won the Swedish league title three times with Malmo previously.

Brentford continued their fine start to the campaign this weekend. Indeed, Jansson got himself on the scoresheet as the Bees came from behind to beat Watford. It was his first goal of the season after playing 90 minutes in every single PL fixture so far.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are desperate to land new players in January. Eddie Howe saw his side hammered by Leicester at the weekend, so addressing the back four is key.

TBR’s View: Jansson To Newcastle Might Work But Only In The Short-term

Pontus Jansson is doing well with Brentford. His performances are good and he fits in well with a club riding high on momentum and good football under Thomas Frank.

However, in terms of Newcastle, he’d surely only be a temporary fit. The Magpies are going to be spending big at some point, so you’d imagine Jansson would be out the door if he helped them to survival this term.

Nonetheless, Eddie Howe might see Jansson as the ideal fit for right now. After all, that is what’s needed at St James’ Park.
