Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on Newcastle United and their interest in Lille defender, Sven Botman, and has declared that the Dutchman is a serious target for the Toon.

Newcastle are expected to spend some money in the January window. Eddie Howe is desperate to add to the squad and with PIF’s backing, the Magpies will no doubt land a few new players. One of which could be Botman, who has been linked with the club in the last few weeks.

The impressive Lille star is said to be valued at around £40m by the French side. The Athletic reported just a week or so back that Newcastle could tempt Lille into a sale, if that £40m fee is met.

Botman has long been on the radar of English clubs. Liverpool and Tottenham have both watched him in the past, so Newcastle know they will be getting a player who is highly-courted.

And according to Fabrizio Romano, it Newcastle have indeed got Botman at the top of their shopping list for January.

TBR’s View: Newcastle Landing Botman Is A Statement Signing

While a lot of the eyes at Newcastle and PIF are on landing players who can make a difference in an attacking sense, there is no doubting the need for defensive help.

If the Toon can land Botman, then it will send quite the message. One of Europe’s most talented up and coming defenders at a £40m price is definitely a way to show the rest of the league they mean business.
